By changing naturalistic backgrounds, the camouflage responses of different species can be measured . " Sepia officinalis " changes color to match the substrate by disruptive patterning ( contrast to break up the outline ), where as " S . pharanonis " matches the substrate by blending in.

It is thought to be a signal of reproductive arousal or aggression, similar to the " zebra display " behaviour of " Sepioteuthis sepioidea ", the " intense zebra display " behaviour of " Sepia officinalis ", and the " lateral display " of " Loligo plei ".

Deimatic behaviour is found in cephalopods including the common cuttlefish " Sepia officinalis ", squid such as the Caribbean reef squid ( " Sepioteuthis sepioidea " ) and bigfin reef squid ( " Sepioteuthis lessoniana " ), octopuses including the common octopus " Octopus vulgaris " and the Atlantic white-spotted octopus ( " Octopus macropus " ), and the paper nautilus ( " Argonauta argo " ).

The maritime reserve is home to various species of crustaceans, molluscs and fishes including the common cuttlefish ( " Sepia officinalis " ), the " Pinna nobilis " clam which produces sea silk, the Mediterranean moray ( " Muraena helena " ) which was regarded as a delicacy by the Romans, the garfish ( " Belone belone " ) and flying gurnard ( " Dactylopterus volitans " ), which uses its enlarged pectoral fins to " walk " along the ocean floor.
